When Facebook faced a patent-infringement lawsuit by Yahoo, countersuing turned out to be an effective strategy, leading to a settlement between the two companies. The social network is apparently hoping for a similar outcome in a patent suit filed against it by Mitel Networks in March.

The Canadian communications outfit claimed in its suit that Facebook infringed on these two patents:

7,292,685, proactive features for telephony, covering systems for proactively suggesting communications features to users.
5,940,834, automatic web page generator, covering automatic Web page generation of organizational directories for use in Internet and Intranet environments.

Much as it did with Yahoo, Facebook filed a countersuit, as reported by The Next Web, involving these two patents:

    7,778,396, telephone status notification system.
    7,454,709, user-definable online co-user lists.

The Next Web also pointed out that the two patents mentioned in Facebook’s countersuit were among the former AOL patents it acquired from Microsoft for $550 million in April.

Facebook also filed a motion to dismiss Mitel Networks’ suit, according to The Next Web.

Readers: After Yahoo ended up settling its suit versus Facebook, do you think Mitel Networks stands a chance?
